We planted a forest of diverse salad greens, buckets of bunching onions and REBUILT OUR COMPOST SYSTEM!

We arranged 9 pallets, used an array of tools like saws, screws, drills, crow bar and our hard working hands to construct the vessel that will house our dynamic compost pile.

Nik Dyer of Purple Carrot Gardening described the needs and elements for any successful compost pile to work, including the ideal dimensions of 3ft * 3ft (which informed our use of wooden pallets), ample moisture, a healthy balance of organic matter: greens (nitrogen) and browns (carbon). Following these simple guidelines, we created conditions for the microorganisms of our pile to stay healthy and fed, while heating up and breaking down the organic matter we add to the pile.

The final product!?! Nutrient rich, organic matter to put back into our thriving rooftop garden system!

Look out for the next edition of our Sunday Workparty/Workshop coming up on February 19th from 1-3pm.
VERMI-LOVE with Booka Alon of Roots to Fruits and Kitchen Garden SF.
Booka will teach us about the benefits of Vermi-composting (composting with worms) and we will build a few worm bins for the garden.

RSVP grazetheroof@gmail.com

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://grazetheroof.blogspot.com/2012/01/you-made-it-happen.html' title='Creatin' Compost. I know gardeners all over the city who are praying and dancing for rain as well as happily harvesting greens, brassicas, fava beans and radishes from their unusually productive winter gardens. At Graze the Roof we're loving the sun, yet also dancing for rain! ...

This last week during our volunteer workday we harvested a hefty 11.5 lbs from the garden, getting us to a comprehensive 50 lbs since we began our weekly harvest in early November of 2011. When we got to the basement to hand it over to the kitchen crew, we bumped into one of the prep cooks who delightfully dug through the bag of fresh greens, herbs and bulbous radishes! He was excited to work with such fresh and tasty seasonal fare!

In other news, the Graze the Roof crew is visioning for how we want to continue increasing food production as well as designing and building out more niches on the roof, to gather, learn, teach and be...lots of great projects on the horizon! Join us on Thursdays from 10a-2p to be a part of this visioning and support the development of our rooftop garden!

We will be offering more opportunities for the community to experience and work in the garden on Sundays this season. Our first Sunday workparty of the year will be Sunday January 29th from 10a-3p! We will round out our workday with a potluck lunch! Bring something delicious to share!
...
REFRESH OUR COMPOST
As gardeners in this fine city, we are learning how important living, breathing soil is to any successful garden community. In our rooftop garden story, we are growing all our goodness in containers. The soil is a dynamic medium that needs a lot of attention. In the spirit of this new year, we want to re-build our compost system to heighten the efficiency and fertility of our soil. Our compost system needs to be REFRESHED and RENEWED. We will be building a classic 3-bin system with pallets and chicken wire. WE NEED YOUR HELP! Join our special Sunday workparty to rebuild our compost!

January 29th 2012
9a - GLIDE Celebration Service
10a - GTR Workday begins...
10:30a - Tour of GTR
11a - GLIDE Celebration Service
12:30 - Tour of GTR
1p-3p - REFRESH OUR COMPOST workparty!
3p - late afternoon potluck! Bring a snack to share! We'll harvest a great big salad from the garden :)
*****(bring your own bowl/plate and utensils)

For a special treat, consider starting your Sunday off by attending one of GLIDE's celebration services at either 9a or 11a. These gatherings of song, compassion and community are inspiring and a great way to connect to the heart of GLIDE.

Feel free to contact Lindsey Goldberg, Project Manager of GTR (grazetheroof@gmail.com) with any questions concerning the workparty and/or other Graze the Roof related inquiries!

Happy gardening!

To a BRIGHT New Year!

<img style="display:block;

In collaboration with Candice Jacobs, Creative Arts Leader of the FYCC (Family, Youth and Childcare Center), our afterschool garden classes (Kinder-Fifth grade) participated in gifting Graze the Roof a vertical garden this holiday season.

The vertical garden consists of dozens of diverse potted succulents and drought-tolerant rosemary strung along the eastern fenceline. Each potted plant is labeled with the child's name and age who is responsible for planting the plant; offering ownership and connection to the environmental stewardship and arts-integrated project.

The children and staff of the FYCC were incredibly respectful in their participation and support of this collaboration. We hope to continue to activate this vertical space into the new year; transforming a chain-link fence into a garden, hummingbird and butterfly sanctuary, and mosaic of art, and living plants!

Gratitude, Nourishment and Community

<img style="display:block;

At Graze the Roof, we have an abundance of BIODIVERSITY; plants of different sizes, shapes, colors, tastes, textures, and functions. The biodiversity of the garden is one of the factors supporting the resiliency, and health of the system.

As my own gardening experience expands and my knowledge and skill-set become more and more refined, I am getting to know, really know and understand the vast world of plants. Like human beings, plants have personalities, tendencies, and unique characteristics. It is fascinating, magical and as I learn more, I become more enchanted by the miracle of life, growth and gardening...and it is so much FUN.

The first plant I am excited to introduce you to is PINEAPPLE SAGE or Salvia Elegans. It is a perennial shrub, meaning that it has an extensive root system and you do not need to re-plant it year after year like many edible annual plants that we know and love: broccoli, tomato, carrot, etc...

The leaves do smell like pineapple and the bright red tubular flowers are attractive to hummingbirds and butterflies.

In traditional Mexico, this plant is used medicinally to treat anxiety and to lower blood pressure.

It is a beautiful plant and can thrive and be enjoyed in both in a containers or in the ground.

Visit our two pineapple sage plants at Graze the Roof during our volunteer workdays (Thursdays 10-2p or the first Sunday of each month between 10a-1p).

Happy planting!

Gift to the Garden

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 313px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VFGgB0OSCGY/TrtUOf14VII/AAAAAAAAALI/dfMd11lPAjs/s400/shoegarden.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5673220763645662338" />

Give a GIFT to the Garden this holiday filled season.

In collaboration with Artistic Program Director, Candice Jacobs of the Family Youth and Childcare Center, Graze the Roof is facilitating an arts integration opportunity for the youth in our after-school programming.

BEAUTFIY THE FENCELINE WITH YOUR TREASURES…AND WATCH IT GROW

A chain link fence has GREAT potential! Mushrooms are rich in nutrition: vitamins and minerals as well as dense with regenerative properties, medicinal benefits and research shows we can partner with mushrooms for sustainable bioremediation projects. I'm a fan of fungus and as a gardener and foodie love this time of year because it is mushroom season in the forest and have always been intrigued by the idea of growing my own mushrooms...

Far West Fungi is a local, family run business that grows mushrooms and distributes widely. You can find their mushrooms at the Ferry Building and at farmer's markets around the city. They had an open house on Sunday to share the magnificence of their mushroom production; to teach and empower fungi.philes to grow their own gourmet mushrooms at home. We made the trek to beautiful Moss Landing where we met other folks passionate about mushrooms and the dynamics of urban agriculture.

We left Far West Fungi with trunk full of saw dust bricks colonized by shitake and oyster mushroom spawn...the foundation for creating a vibrant mushroom garden.

This week's volunteer workday will focus on creating mushroom gardens in the shady wet regions under our raised beds!

...Also I just observed oyster mushrooms growing out of our compost bin! Amazing!

Come on up to the roof this THURSDAY NOV. 3rd from 10a-2p to learn about and participate in the installation of mushroom gardens!

See you then!

-Lindsey

Fall Flowers, Autumn Abundance

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IFs6mrWPMXI/TrFxiZSwCQI/AAAAAAAAAIw/QlcqxmZimnA/s400/IMG_0915.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5670438241555187970" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ScFzGJyn1cA/TrFxhSMwleI/AAAAAAAAAIg/D9uL0WlMWhs/s400/IMG_0916.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5670438222471140834" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FLD8dmwg878/TrFxgb9T1iI/AAAAAAAAAIU/XJcBzWZWn_8/s400/IMG_0920.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5670438207910827554" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vj9J42DuPZc/TrFxd75JFKI/AAAAAAAAAII/nKXQLMDCDcM/s400/IMG_0914.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5670438164943672482" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ptH4V-I5Y38/TrFxdc6PImI/AAAAAAAAAH8/Bichsxa64_c/s400/IMG_0913.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5670438156626764386" />

Each of the photos tells a story; these are stories of seasonality, microclimate, taste, color, texture, habitat, nourishment, learning, community and wonder.

As we work together in community week after week, we learn more and more about the rooftop where we garden. The potential for growing an abundant food system in the Tenderloin is huge! We aspire offer our abundant harvest to the GLIDE kitchen so that a fresh salad of mixed heirloom greens or fresh herbs to season and flavor can be enjoyed by those benefitting from the meals program at least once a week.

Yesterday during the volunteer workday, we planted six heads of garlic, built foundations to support our milk-crate container raised beds, and marveled at the robust size of our arugula growing at the base of the lime tree.

We had visits from nurses who work in the health clinic on the 6th floor, they enjoy their lunch in the garden every Thursday, past volunteers and students from UC Berkeley interested in helping to raise awareness about Graze the Roof throughout San Francisco and the greater Bay Area.

Under the hot autumn sun, we laughed, celebrated, turned and sifted compost, planted and created.

We hope you'll join us next Thursday from 10a-2p for our weekly opportunity to support the food forest atop GLIDE Memorial Church.

email grazetheroof@gmail.com with any questions/comments you may have!

THANK YOU

Vibrant and Bountiful!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-iiRgBydAhoM/Tpip50Kn5sI/AAAAAAAAAHo/HryBoNyOuAo/s400/IMG_0904.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5663463342139238082" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-43-dDApFwSk/Tpip5cJFD0I/AAAAAAAAAHc/jhCF9zx7aik/s400/IMG_0903.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5663463335690309442" />

The garden is thriving thanks to the spectacular October weather we are having: sunshine and light fall rain. Graze the Roof has tomatoes!

Please join us in our extended late summer-early fall hours of 10a-2p each Thursday to taste a tomato, turn the compost, build soil, container garden construction, weed, water, and experience the continued transformation of a rooftop into a thriving and abundant food system.

Integrating the GLIDE kitchen/meal distribution program has been a part of the long-term vision of Graze the Roof since it’s inception. In recent weeks we have been retrieving coffee grounds from the Thursday morning brew to help heat our compost, as well as food scraps to feed the worms in the vermicomposting bin. These are steps we are actively taking in collaboration with the kitchen team to integrate these two food/community centers within the GLIDE Foundation.

This week, September 12th-16th, FYCC garden classes start up again. This season Kinder, 1st and 2nd grade as well as 3rd through 5th grade will all get the opportunity to spend time in the garden on a weekly basis! The youthful energy truly helps the essence of the garden to come alive!

Calling all honey-bee lovers! ... The students presented the agreements they came up with in their small groups and we created one big poster that everyone signed that is hanging at the entrance to the garden. We wrapped up our session reading a story about a Community Garden located in San Francisco and talked about all of the tasks, creatures, and yummy plants associated with community gardening.

The Kinder class is back! A group of curious, and imaginative Kinders came to the garden just as the sun was warming the rooftop, we made our agreements around the picnic table and then started exploring. It had been awhile since these children had been on the roof and there was a lot to observe. The new vermi-composting system (worm bin) was an exciting discovery. Lizette giggled as the worms danced on her palm and Ashley piled 55 worms in her hand and then shared them with the rest of the group! We tasted flowers and looked at the baby carrots.

A busy workday of planting succulents in burlap pockets along the fenceline, painting signs, planting flowers, turning the compost, and feeding the trees.

We had a visit from Jane Kim the district representative and a visit from our Integrated Pest Management expert in preparation for a workshop on the topic on June 25th, (rsvp: grazetheroof@gmail.com).

In the afternoon, I met the group of teens in the Teen Program and we began, "The Taste of Place," an 8-week series bringing the world of cooking and gardening together. After journaling and a rich discussion of food culture and tradition, went up to the roof to meet the garden. We took a great tour, coinciding with Paul Koski, (the beekeeper)'s weekly visit to the hive. The students asked great questions, we laughed together and got to witness thousands of bees dance in and out of the hive. We wrapped up our session with weeding, watering and harvesting, celebrating the day with big fresh salad of lettuce, mustard greens, sugar snap peas, purple carrots, and nasturium flowers. Yum!

What a day!
I love summer!

Tomatoes!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Nt0Ks13wSxc/Td88plCfCoI/AAAAAAAAAE0/Phlo2wD0rEc/s400/IMG_0698.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5611270345741765250" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-AckQ7DU7Z_g/Td88pR9V7JI/AAAAAAAAAEs/tNzBNZoXIEA/s400/IMG_0695.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5611270340619922578" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-TRyOdBrqeGE/Td88owMb3mI/AAAAAAAAAEk/HqCbhL4GteE/s400/IMG_0690.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5611270331556421218" />

When the first edition of Golden Gate Gardening was published, gardeners throughout San Francisco had a resource rooted in the soil of our home; the chapters of this manual tended by a gardener and educator Pamela Pierce. This seminal work continues to inspire, empower and support gardeners all over the city, from small scale planters on balconies to 2.2 acre urban farms in the heart of San Francisco, Pam Pierce is a legend to those of us with green thumb!

She contacted Graze the Roof recently in regards to offering the garden tomato plants. Pam Pierce was not just offering any tomato plants, she was offering diverse varieties known for resisting late blight (a disease that can negatively affect the health and harvest of a tomato plant) and for thriving in the unique microclimates of San Francisco. These are plants that Pam started in her laboratory at City College of San Francisco. Thank you Pam!

Pam's research and writing can be found at : www.pampeirce.com

Today was a beautiful day on the roof; sunshine and a cool, refreshing breeze encouraged productivity, camaraderie and creativity. Around noon we were joined by members of the Glide staff who decided to organize a communal picnic lunch and enjoy it on the roof together. Their picnic (as you can see in the photo) was colorful and delicious!

Heirloom lettuce is thriving, carrots have sprouted, tomatos stand tall, peas are flowering, kales are developing and the garden has new lessons for us every week. Connecting to our "Life-Place," is integral to developing understanding of and appreciation for the natural world and how we as human beings inhabiting bioregions can support the greater equilibrium of Place.

In the workshop at Graze the Roof on Saturday, Peter invited us to make a map of the places where we live. We were asked, draw the closest water body to where you sleep, to draw/label native flora and fauna, to draw the type of soil that dominates the land where you live, the highest peaks near your home, and the best and worst contributions of humans to their respective bioregions. Each participant's map had it's own unique flavor and character. I was filled with a deep sense of inquiry, wondering aloud how I, a passionate steward of the natural world, a gardener, an educator did not know the answers to many of these seemingly fundamental questions about Living in Place. I came to the conclusion that this was the beginning of a practice. These questions are opportunities to learn more about the Place that I live and feel so connected to, a chance to discover the layers of beauty that make the Bioregion of Northern California such a special place to be from and to live.

After a morning of mapping we began our journey onto rooftops and into the streets of the Tenderloin to explore the different projects that support the ecological balance, habitat, beauty, community and education. We toured Graze the Roof, and the rooftop garden atop the CW House next door to Glide Memorial Church's Foundation Building.

From the rooftops to the streets. We walked toward a project on Ellis called the Tenderloin National Forest. An alley that has been stewarded by artists since 1989; it is now a community commons, where people of all ages can gather for public art, performance, experimental art projects and classes connected to supporting this inner city garden and art space. I was overwhelmed to discover such a radiant project embodying transformation. When we arrived, the forest was brimming with artists busy at work creating a Hydro-Labratory, water features, tending to succulents and shrubbery, warming themselves by the earthen oven and hanging signs made from recycled materials. It was phenomenal!

http://www.luggagestoregallery.org/tnf/

Connecting to the Places we Live inspires stewardship, community and possibility!

Bees and Basil!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-J8U8y_YKU68/TcB2tyIzd4I/AAAAAAAAADc/H2phDgwrUdk/s400/IMG_0657.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5602608465373788034" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FgLQOQXgEPM/TcB2tX83RzI/AAAAAAAAADU/U35GIau9XJ0/s400/IMG_0653.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5602608458344384306" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-zaiVahgSZP8/TcB2s36yXaI/AAAAAAAAADM/ePFisyvS3-M/s400/IMG_0644.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5602608449745739170" />

The morning and early afternoon sparkled! Warm sunshine and bright blue skies supported the freshening of garden beds and the spring planting of six different varieties of heirloom tomatoes and basil plants, as well as dozens of sweat pea plants delicious fava beans!!!

Thank you to Purple Carrot, Flatland Flower Farm and Occidental Arts and Ecology center for your donations of fava beans, carrot seeds, pea plants and the robust and vibrant plant sales over the weekend where much of our new plants have come from!

http://www.ilovepurplecarrot.com/
http://www.cuesa.org/farm/flatland-flower-farm
http://www.oaec.org/

As we were enjoying a picnic lunch at the center table, nursing students from the health clinic joined us, and we found ourselves in joyful conversation. It is wonderful when the greater Glide staff community makes use of the rooftop garden, as a place to harvest seasonal produce, learn new skills, develop appreciation for the natural world and growing cycle as well as build community!!!

Paul Koski, our resident Bee Keeper, called as we were finishing lunch and said he'd drop by to install the bees!!! We were thrilled and prepared for Paul's arrival. He came with a wooden bee box(hive) all taped up. He said this infant bee colony had been settling into this new hive for about a week. Paul informed us that an infant bee colony such as ours, most likely holds 7000-7500 bees!!! This colony could support up to 60,000 bees! Wow!

As we were observing the bees during the installation, we discovered the queen and lots of healthy larvae.

Paul will come back to check on the bees in about two weeks!

Bee well!

:)

More opportunities to Volunteer, Learn, and Grow Food!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nDH-AsajedY/Tbx2CPpnTWI/AAAAAAAAADE/SEY57YE3FIw/s400/IMG_0643.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5601481817474944354" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qislQxmQTik/Tbx2B6WXkkI/AAAAAAAAAC8/vhq9V1dnWPo/s400/IMG_0642.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5601481811757077058" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0o_QW11Khc0/Tbx2Be21AjI/AAAAAAAAAC0/ckPMdZuxhJg/s400/IMG_0641.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5601481804377031218" />

A colorful and bountiful harvest was gathered on Thursday afternoon during the workday! Oh and did we feel impassioned this past Saturday when Nik Dyer led us in an conversation about the life cycle, biology and ecology of mushrooms. From bioremediation, to medicinal properties to culinary treasures, mushrooms, or more aptly stated, mycellium, the heart of the fungal network is responsible for so much of the dynamic equilibrium that holds our ecosystemic balance in place, not to mention that mushrooms and mycellium embody great potential for healing, nourishment and artistic inspiration.

As a group, the workshop participants represented diverse walks of life, professional endeavors and personal hobbies; we live all over San Francisco and the East Bay and each have a unique connection to the enchanting world of mushrooms. We learned in community and then we worked in community! Together, under the sun, we worked hard to create a mushroom garden for Graze the Roof; shredding and pasteurizing straw, filling burlap sacks with straw and shitake spawn and drilling holes in oak logs which we filled with inoculated dowles of oyster spawn.

The mushroom garden is now nestled among the other edible and beautiful elements that make up Graze the Roof!
Come check it out!

THIS THURSDAY 4/14 - VOLUNTEER WORKDAY SPECIAL HOURS: 3pm-5pm

FUNGUS AMONG US!

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dL8kY8ut3SY/TZlbIb5ERSI/AAAAAAAAACU/OGpBssFVpxs/s400/IMG_8681.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5591600612841375010" />

GRAZE THE ROOF PRESENTS:

"FUNGUS AMONG US!"
Introduction to the Wonderful World of Mushrooms and
Urban Mushroom Cultivation

DATE: Saturday April 9th 2011

LOCATION: Graze the Roof, 330 Ellis Street, San Francisco

TIME: 10:30a-12:30p

PRICE: Sliding Scale, pay what you can: $5-$20

RSVP: Spaces are limited! This diverse group of young leaders stepped onto the rooftop wanting to discuss empowerment, application of rooftop gardening techniques to small-scale home gardening, and the transformative edge between youth education and the urban food and farming movement.

This movement empowers. Why? Because the fundamental act of gardening or farming, of getting your hands in the soil, cultivating fertility, biodiversity and nourishment, in tandem with awakening seasonal awareness and a sensibility of life's interconnections is essential to evolving humanity's eco-literacy.

As we toured the garden, we discussed the different techniques that we use on the roof to compost, produce a yield, experiment with different containers to grow food, practical tips on what to plant, how to plant seeds, yield potential and the educational branch, and community outreach component that is core to the urban food and farming movement.

These young leaders have vision. They are gaining skills and experience that will fuel their respective work to feed, nurture and educate the collective.

Weeding, Refreshing, and Watering

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2qmWeDYpeDY/TXFLdq0j37I/AAAAAAAAACE/ubBQt9yjxdU/s400/IMG_0485.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5580324386371788722" />

The chard sparkles and the spinach sprouts look vibrant and healthy, the garden feels and smells fresh on a surprisingly sunny and warm Thursday morning. There is a sweet quiet that permeates the rooftop garden. In the heart of the tenderloin, traffic swirls below, and yet seven floors up, the static, the layered rhythms of city living seem to melt away. I am present with the colors of the garden; the bountiful food growing in milk crates, and five gallon buckets captivates my senses. I notice bees buzzing amongst the flowerbeds and a few ladybugs crawling up the yarrow.

The first volunteer, Ruby arrives, and begins making her rounds, weeding and tending to the plants. Joseph arrives, sets down his stuff and brews up some worm tea to fertilize our flowering fruit trees.

Thanks to a donation from Four Barrel Coffee in the Mission, we had a hefty stack of burlap sacks. Joseph began taking measurements and repurposing the coffee sacks to serve as an aesthetic covering for our white plastic buckets that make up much of our container garden and needed to be “refreshed.”

Caroline joins us around noon with her peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Full of passion and enthusiasm for all things community, we discuss future plans for a summer rooftop bbq and volunteer appreciation event. Caroline waters the thirsty garden; we go in and out of conversation, each of us involved in our own tasks while working on a collective vision.

Around 1:30 we pause, drank a lot of cool water and ate at the community picnic table, the moment was rich with laughter, life lessons, and birthday invitations.

The afternoon sun high in the sky, we said our goodbyes and each went our separate ways, after having shared a highly productive, creative, and fruitful volunteer workday on the roof.

Participate
Learn
Teach
Engage
Garden
Graze the Roof!

Volunteer Workdays Thursdays from 11a-1p

Seeding the roof. The rooftop garden at Glide Memorial Church exemplifies the possibilities.

Herbs, vegetables and flowers, a greenhouse, a picnic table, a vermicompost system (compost with worms) is a classroom, a community gathering space, a volunteer opportunity and a place to find nourishment. I feel very lucky to have the opportunity to teach and learn with the students from the Family, Youth and Childcare Center.

This afternoon was beautiful, clear skies, sunshine and a light, cool breeze. I met the kinder class at the FYCC and we walked over to Glide, with a snack of goldfish in hand to feed the worms on the roof. We broke up the goldfish into little worm bite-sized pieces and sprinkled the bright orange cracker on the top of the pile. “Mmmmmm….it smells so good in here,” commented Joshua. We peer into the pile and notice that the top layer was laden with fresh herbs: dill, thyme, mint and parsley. Yum! These worms eat well!

We gather around the center picnic table and I scatter mung bean seeds on the table. We each look closely at the seeds. Green, round, smooth andsmall; we discuss how seeds can be as big as our head, as in a coconut and smaller than an ant. Seed size, color, and texture are so varied. We talk about what seeds need to spout: water, sunshine, soil and air...we experiment with the mung beans: we put 3.5 tablespoons of beans into a mason jar and pour 1 cup of water over them. We screw on a lid, letting the seeds soak in the water. Over the next week, these seeds will be rinsed twice a day, to encourage germination (sprouting) and then when we meet again next Thursday we can see how the seeds have transformed and maybe taste them too!

After our experiment, we go over to a planter box that is ready to be planted and we learn how to plant seeds. We each plant dozens of spinach seeds in the soil! Each week we return to the rooftop garden we can observe the growth of our seeds. We made sure to label the areas where we planted so we could remember what we planted and who planted where.

To round out our session, we helped the garden with the harvest and learned how to pick radishes and peas. We discovered pink, and red and white radishes, and lots of sweet peas growing out of white flowers on the vine.

Finally, as the sun was getting low in the sky, we worm-wiggled our way into a closing circle, we each shared our favorite thing from the day, while some of us munched on peas and radishes, and we left the rooftop just as pink wispy clouds began to color the sky.

I can’t wait till next week!

Lindsey Goldberg
Graze the Roof | Youth Educator

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://grazetheroof.blogspot.com/2011/02/seeding-roof-grazing-roof-celebrating.html' title='Seeding the roof. The main program begins at 5:00pm. The garden features various raised garden planters, a miniature greenhouse, a storage shed, a rainwater harvesting system, a worm composting system and a beautiful mural designed by residents. This vibrant space benefits both the community and the environment and was made possible through San Francisco’s Community Challenge Grant Program and the San Francisco Zen Center, whose expertise in gardening and organic farming helped catalyze the project. Come celebrate the creation of this space with us!

Support our work by bringing your friends and community members and don’t forget to bring your checkbooks.
